What an AI support answer costs, and where the cost goes

Every AI answer has a running cost. Serene Resolve records it on every step and keeps it down in two ways. Here is what other help desks charged for AI as of October 2026.

The Serene Resolve team · 3 min read

An AI agent is not free to run. Each time it thinks, it uses a model, and the model is paid for by the amount of text it reads and writes.

Cost is recorded, not estimated

Serene Resolve records the cost of every step the agent takes, and adds it up per ticket. So the cost of resolving a ticket is something you can look up, not guess.

Two ways the cost stays down

  • Questions with a known answer are answered from the library, with no model at all.
  • Simple steps are designed to go to a smaller, cheaper model, and the larger one is kept for reasoning and replies.

What other help desks charge for AI

Most help desks now charge for people and for AI separately: a price for each seat on your team, plus a price for each AI resolution, outcome or session. These were the published AI prices as of October 2026:

  • HubSpot Breeze Customer Agent: $0.50 per resolved conversation
  • Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent: $0.49 per session
  • Help Scout AI Answers: $0.75 per resolution
  • Intercom Fin: $0.99 per outcome
  • Zendesk AI Agents: $1.50 per resolution on a commitment, or $2.00 pay as you go

These are list prices in US dollars, before tax, and they move. HubSpot, for one, changed on 2026-04-14 from $1.00 for every conversation to $0.50 for each resolved one. Check a vendor’s own page before you compare.

What counts as a resolution

A fair price for AI support depends on counting resolutions honestly. The definition we are designing around is strict: the AI’s reply solved the ticket, no person had to step in, and the ticket wasn’t reopened. A handoff is not a resolution.

The definition is where the prices really differ. HubSpot counts a conversation as resolved when it isn’t handed to a person within 72 hours, and doesn’t charge for unresolved ones. Intercom charges nothing when the customer asks for a person or Fin can’t answer. Freshdesk charges for each session whether it resolves or not.

What a small team pays in total

The research we work from added up monthly totals from those list prices for a typical small team: 3–5 people, 300–1,000 conversations a month, 150–500 of them handled by AI, on chat and email. For that team, as of October 2026:

  • the cheapest working desks, on flat workspace or credit plans, came to about $95–$150 a month
  • a per-seat help desk with per-resolution AI came to about $250–$750 a month
  • the middle tiers of the bigger help desks came to about $700–$1,500 a month
  • AI phone calls, at 500–2,000 minutes a month, added about $40–$300

Those totals are estimates worked out from list prices, not quotes. The large enterprise AI agents, such as Ada, Decagon and Sierra, publish no prices at all and sell through their sales teams, so there is no list price to compare them with.
